Pompeii + Mt Vesuvius

After basking on the shores of the Amalfi Coast – a hike up to Mt Vesuvius and an afternoon  stroll through the frozen-in-time streets of Pompeii.

Pompeii: You read and hear about it and know that it really happened but to see it in real life is something different

Pompeii was just another Roman seaside resort until Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD

Mt Vesuvius: located in the gulf of Naples in Campania.

Why hike Mt Vesuvius? A 15-20 minute grind up a wide gravel path. The path is not steep, but it’s relentless The hike up to the crater rim of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy is a unique and interesting way to experience history.Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. There are 3 million people living under it, making the threat of any eruption even more dangerous. the most recent of which was in 1944.

When you hike the crater of Mount Vesuvius you tread the path of the legendary hero, Hercules. the ancient Greeks and Romans regarded Mount Vesuvius as sacred.

Both Hercules and Venus, the patroness of Pompeii, were worshipped in the region, so even if you don’t believe Hercules ever actually set foot on the volcano, the land is still steeped in his myths and lore.

Unico Artecard – 3 day tourist pass for Naples, Pompeii

http://www.campaniartecard.it/?lang=en

Aimed squarely at the visitor to Naples this pass combines public transport in Naples for 3 days, (including the Naples airport bus) plus entry to two attractions from a long list that includes the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum.

How to get to Pompeii: The Circumvesuviana trains between Naples and Sorrento stop at Pompeii Station close to the front gates of the Pompeii Site and for Herculaneum, Ercalano Scavi Station is about a 10-minute walk.

How to get to Mt Vesuvius from Pompeii:

You have 2 options: located just outside the Pompeii train station.

  • local bus company, EavBus/ Sita, private tour bus
  • by car, the main car park is about another 100m further down, so extra climbing is required up to the entrance.

I suggest to take the tour bus: it is a scheduled route vs the public bus we heard that the schedule is not that accurate. The biggest perk: the bus would take you all the way up to the entrance of the hiking trail. The bus will drop you off at an altitude of around 1,000m

If by car, the main car parking lot is about another 100m further down, so extra climbing is required up to the entrance.

Take Note: book your entrance tickets to the hiking trail online, or else you would have to walk down to the visitor center to purchase the tickets.
