My 3rd Half Marathon! Yes, I can’t believe it myself. When I started running, my goal was to run a Half Marathon once in my life. Then came the Napa Half. I thought, well Napa is beautiful in the fall might as well join the Half Marathon. So- the end of the story – why not the San Francisco Marathon which is one of the biggest marathon in the US. So be it, I signed up and set a goal. What transpired after 3 months of training?

13.1  lessons  I  learned

1. Discipline: the fact that I have to stick to my training schedule and cross out the weekend long runs. I have this notion that if I skip one long run, my stamina decreases along with my chance of walking half of the Half , or not finishing the half marathon. What does that mean? Well, not being able to go my Friday happy hour league, no sleeping in on weekends, and spending the rest of my Saturday with sore legs.

2. 4:30 am wakeup call: got out of bed by 4:30 am to make it to the gym by 5 am at least 3X /weekdays. I did that for 3 months, but honestly missed and hit the snooze a couple of times. No excuses I have to make it up.

3. The importance of healthy diet: I learned how to eat healthily and home-cooked meal is the healthiest. What is healthy eating for me? No processed food, more greens on my plate- at least 1 cup of veggies a day. Learned to drink fresh juices and made my smoothies. My body transformed as I progressed. Transformed meaning, just that feeling and knowing that I’m able to feed my body with healthy meals. Being able to treat myself got along with it. Note to myself: never ever deprive yourself of your favorite food and anything you eat should be in moderation.

4. Friendly with strangers: Smile at strangers –nice lesson learned. I met new friends through my Running Club but extended the circle with the strangers at our training grounds. We all shared same frustrations, same goal, and gave each other a pat. Surprisingly, I met new friends from around the globe during the marathon. 1 from Australia and 1 from Singapore. Yes! They traveled! They made me realized how lucky I’am to live in this awesome city.

5. Embracing the weather: We are all aware of the San Francisco weather. I learned how to not get disappointed when it’s windy, misty, foggy, and cold. Adapt to whatever it brings you and slowly embrace it. I actually enjoyed the run the most when we reached the Golden Gate Bridge because that’s where I felt and shared the SF weather to the runners around the world.

7. Me Time is precious: sometimes a bit selfish is good when it comes to running. Running will make you tune into your mind and body.

8. Good and Bad Runs: the acceptance of a Bad running day and a Good running day.

9. Never let anyone tell you NO you can’t run.

.1 A huge reason to overload Carbs

It’s hard to explain what it felt like to see the finish line. It was all about the 3 months of training, waking up at 3:00 am race day, sore body, the rain, the wind,- it is the enthusiasm of achieving my goal, motivating, and challenging myself every time I get out there.
